Celebrating Tazz'unt

a film by
Mustapha HASNAOUI
(26', 1996)

This film is about the ancient Berber culture.

Every year, on July 31rst once the first harvest is over and the second crop is still in the fields, the Berber villagers of the Tessaout valley get together for 2 days for the “tazz’unt” feast.

The film depicts this celebration taking place deep into the Atlas Mountains of Morocco with the Ichebakenne fortress in the background.

In this area, people still play an ancestral music named Ahwach, based on singing and percussion. As often in the Maghreb, the prevailing Islamic culture conceals the pre-Islamic background, but the practices coming from the ancient agrarian rituals and pagan feasts firmly belong to the culture of these people.
