Somaa

a film by
Mohamed CHARBAGI and Nacer KHEMIR
(52', 1979 - 1980)

A cruel tale, an ordinary village: SOMAA, both a foray into the world of imagination and an exploration of a crippling reality. Fairy tales belong to the past or to children, but from the moment of circumcision, the world of myths fades away and it's the fall into grinding daily existence.

The humdrum of summer is man at work, his never-ending battle with his parched portion of land , hence his double exodus to city or foreign land , to petty jobs and ridiculous wages. Time dragging by, killed only by a game of dominoes or cards. It's also a time to celebrate rituals, wedding ceremonies and religious feasts with hardly any meaning left to them. Slowly the old memories fade away while the monotonous drone of modernity settles in.
