The separation

a film by
Natacha DEFONTAINE

(52', 2002)

Abdou Sokhna is a Senegalese who sells artefacts (belts, bags, djembes), which he brings back from Africa, in the markets of Saint Raphaël in the South of France. He’s one of the « modu-modus », as they are called in Senegal, that is, the brave, resourceful, seasonal workers who go and look for money in the West to provide for their families.

The Sokhna family live in Senegal, in Kaolack, a 200,000 inhabitants city, mostly populated by women who wait for months for their husband s to come home. Deprived of emotional security, these women lead a difficult life and raise their children on their own.

Nogai Sokhna and her two children meet up with Abdou every year from December to March, when he comes home after eight months of absence. This film throws light on a current social problem: the separation of couples and the breaking-up of families, due to the emigration of men gone to work in rich countries. What are the social, cultural and emotional consequences of it?
