Sangatte, open town

a film by
Grégory LAVILLE
(52', 2002)

This film recounts the story of the centre of Sangatte all along the year 2002 up to its closing. It was opened in 1999 and nearly 60,000 wand ering refugees were accomodated there, while they were trying to cross the English Channel to settle in England .

For three years, the centre of Sangatte took in up to 1,600 refugees a day, to the point of generating both hatred and compassion among the disorientated local population. The 800 -inhabitant town of Sangatte mobilized its population to demand the closing of the centre.

By confronting the points of view of the people of Sangatte with that of a former refugee who for a while lived in France as an illegal immigrant, this film throws light on the awkward coexistence of these two communities.
