Prelude to an Organ

a film by
Pierre HANAU
(1x52' & 2x26', 2001 - 2002)

The organ maker Rémy Mahler is working on a new organ for the church of Suippes, in the Marne region of France. The different stages of this exceptional labour span more than a year.

This film is a documentary essay about the birth of musical sound. It takes us from the workshop, where the organ maker works with a team of some ten craftsmen and apprentices, to the church, where he, alone, tunes up the thousand s of pipes that make up his instrument.

Much more than the creation of a simple musical instrument, the birth of this organ is at once the interpretation of raw matter and a singular type of quest for the absolute.
