The Compiègne forest,
land of history

a film by
Didier PARMENTIER
collection: Terres de France

(30', 2005)

Eugenia’s Road, named after the Empress, connects the city of Compiègne to Pierrefonds Castle and runs across the 14,000 acres of one of the largest forests in France.

Riding along this road in a horse-carriage, in the company of our guide Mario Luraschi, we follow in Napoleon III's footsteps. As an equestrian adviser on more than 400 films, Mario knows the region very well and his passion for the 2nd Empire makes him an ideal guide who evokes the various historical films he participated in.

This journey throws light on the spirit in which the castle was restored. When Napoléon III commissioned the restoration to Viollet le Duc, his approach was plainly playful and unmindful of historical authenticity: he imagined a fantasy medieval castle and had the project carried out according to his dream.

Images of the rebuilding of the castle (archives, engravings, photos), shots of the forest in the autumn mist, of troating stags, as well as excerpts from Mario’s period films, come as a punctuation along the horse-carriage trip.
