Lebanon : Post-war reconciliations

a film by
Aïda Kanafani-Zahar and Olivier Doat
(57', 2004)

Between 1975 and 1990, war devastated Lebanon, leaving very heavy losses. The topic of this documentary is the work to reach peace and reconciliation in Mount Lebanon. During the « war of the mountain » between the christian Lebanese Forces and the druze forces of the Progressist Socialist Party, massacres have been perpetrated and places of worship destroyed. Approximately 160.000 christians were forced to leave their villages. In compliance with the policy devised by the Ministry of the Displaced (created in 1992 in compliance with the Accord of Taëf), most of the displaced persons haved returned to their villages and reconciliations achieved with the druze.

Today, however, some reconciliations remain to be accomplished. Why forteen years after the end of the war, problems remain unsolved and hinder common life from resuming ? Two families, the first, christian from the village of Brîh, the other, druze from Abay seek this path to reconciliation. They share with us their hopes and sufferings and evoke their daily difficulties.

This path towards reconciliation, with its political dimension given by the Ministry of the Displaced, is the occasion for the spectator to understand this period of the history of Lebanon. The lebanese case as an example of a multiconfessional society provides the opportunity to reflect about the apprenticeship of « mate-living ».
