Singing wood

a film by
Jean-Claude MORIN
(52', 2004)

’Singing‘ wood is the name given to some rare kinds of wood which are used in the making of string instruments. In France, it is grown in the eastern part of the country: Vosges, Alsace, and Franche-Comté. This movie reveals some of the secrets of the makers of organs and string instruments including guitars or mand olins.

The film is also an invitation to discover some fabulous and long-time forgotten instruments, like the nickelharpa, the moraharpa, the tagelharpa, the rebec, the psaltérion and many more, including the marine trumpet, which is a string instrument, in spite of its name!

Finally, we will see the newly invented musical instrument: ‘l’arbrasson’ or sound tree introduced by its creator the young tree-climber-cum-pruner José Le Piez. The way to play this instrument is indeed rather peculiar: you stroke it and it sings with all the generosity of its wood…
