India in the shop window

A film by
Natacha DEFONTAINE
(52', 2005)

"India in the Shop Window" is a scenarized re-creation of The Force of the Soul, a show by choreographer Karine Saporta, which takes place in Ahmedabad, India and in Paris.

Indian and Spanish dancers meet in a great Parisian department store where they dance in a window.
Soon they decide to explore this new, puzzling world, a temple of the consumer society.

Then they go on an expedition across Paris, which is entirely new to them. They never fail to mark each discovery by a performance. They proceed to various places in Paris where Indian presence can be felt: Passage Brady, le Sacré Coeur, Barbès. From time to time, nostalgia strikes and they are carried away to India, where they imagine themselves dancing in Hindu temples, in mosques, about animated and noisy streets, among sacred cows and florists.

In a light and wonderful manner, the film keeps going to and fro between India and France, thus revealing the relation between Kathak, a classical dance of northern India, flamenco and western ballet.
