Back to Guitera

a film by
Natacha DEFONTAINE
(26', 2004)

In spite of the globalisation of taste, cooking traditions around the Mediterranean Sea are still thriving. In the village of Guitera in Corsica, Paul-Antoine Lanfranchi is a pork butcher and an inn-keeper. His cooking is based on flair and a genuine enjoyment of food combined with traditionnal know-how and talent to prepare the various produce found on the island .

What are the chances of survival of this cooking tradition? How can modernity and tradition be reconciled, how to preserve this cultural heritage? Paul-Antoine and his circle of friends and relatives discuss the hard work, the difficulty of adjusting to the seasonal flow of tourists, the perilous economic situation of the local suppliers, and the public health regulations which disrupt the traditions.

Bringing to light the sense of tradition and transmission of this Corsican family, the film is a small contribution to a sort of memorial of tastes and flavours which should be erected in order to preserve this heritage and transmit it to the next generations.
