The Compostela craze

a film by
Caroline REUSSNER
(26', 1999)

On July 25th 1999, Saint James’ day, the greatest christian rally of the end of the twentieth century took place in Santiago de Compostela.

Hundreds of thousand s of pilgrims and tourists of all ages, nationalities, social classes and trades had come to honor the Saint Patron of Spain, after covering more than 2000 Km on foot or bicycle in some cases.

In the past few years, we have seen more and more men and women leaving their homes and jobs to walk or ride toward the city of the Apostle for weeks or even months on end.

What are the motivations of these modern day pilgrims? What are they seeking on these age-old paths that run across Europe and have been declared a world heritage site?

The Compostela Craze describes and analyzes this recent social phenomenon, following several pilgrims both in their actual and spiritual progress.
