Camargue, grounds of reliefs.

a film by
Didier PARMENTIER
collection: Terres de France

(30', 2005)

November 11 is a National Day. While everywhere in France the anniversary of the 1918 Armistice is celebrated, in Camargue, bulls and horses are honoured. For the local “gardians”, this a celebration that should not be missed on any account. Up to 1500 horsemen meet at Saintes Marie de la mer for the abrivado festival. The beach and the streets are turned into a race track for horses and bulls and for the boldest of the men.

In the ranches and on the posters, the bull is the true star. Man is only present to set if off. Raised in complete freedom, never tamed, the bull is at the root of local traditions and of the reputation of the region.
In the southern part of the Rhône delta, the extensive breeding of horses and bulls is a decisive factor in the preservation of this territory of marshes and lands unfit for cultivation.

In Arles amphitheatre, we meet fashion designer Christian Lacroix, who discusses the source of his inspiration and how his models give it form. He talks about his passion for Camargue and its traditions. A series of portraits illustrate his narrative, allowing us to discover the spirit of Camargue and to understand the devotion to the bull “la Fe di Biou”.
