Cinecalligramme,
arabic calligraphy

a film by
Mohamed CHARBAGI
(30', 1985)

An exceptional document wich combines shots from the Alhambra palace in Granada (Spain), the Kayrouan, Sousse and Gabes mosques (Tunisia), the Saadian mausoleum and Ben Yussef Medersa in Marrakech (Morocco) as well as a very rich collection of calligraphies from the National Library (Tunis), The British Library (London) and objects from Le Musée du Louvre (Paris).

Celebration of Arabic calligraphy as a major Islamic art, which conveys the word of God and provides a unique source of aesthetic inspiration.

Contemplation of the calligrapher's multifarious art : stylistic evolution, permanence and dissemination throughout the Islamic world, whether on parchment, paper, wood, metal or stone, calligraphy thus reaching its ultimate development in architecture.

Meditation on the spirit and the letter: an art so closely linked with language inevitably induced semantic speculation carried to the point of metaphysical vertigo as one would marvel at the incarnation of the Word in the Sign.
