The Saint-Denis Basilica microcosm

a film by
Natacha DEFONTAINE
(26', 1999)

This documentary proposes an original exploration of Saint Denis Basilica as the last historical land mark where the royalists and the republicans still confront each other, and this in a town which is run by a communist council.

This leads to controversies or even conflicts about the possible restauration of the monument and historical truth : do the remains of Marie-Antoinette and Louis XVI really lie in the Basilica ?

On the one hand , Serge Santos, the film’s main character, truly wants to make of Saint Denis Basilica a rallying point for all the communities and the children of the town, favouring integration. On the other hand , the royalists celebrate mass every year on the anniversary of the death of King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette.

The film humorously underlines these divergent courses and depicts the Basilica as a colourful, singular place, the site of an ongoing human comedy.
