Good morning Gaza

a film by Rashid MASHARAOUI
(90' et 52')

«GOOD MORNING GAZA » is an invitation to discover the life of the Palestinian population in Gaza, where a million and a half souls live in an « open air prison». The Palestinian authorities govern Gaza, but, to this day, Israel still controls its land and sea borders as well as its air space and dictates the circulation of men and goods. And divided between the Islamic drift of Hamas (the Islamic Resistance Movement) and the inaction and corruption of Fatah (the Movement for the National Liberation of Palestine), the Palestinians are more than ever tearing each other apart.

Rashid Masharawi, a native of Gaza, offers us an insight into the daily life in the Gaza strip by following a band of young Palestinian rappers as they are preparing their new CD and organising their biggest concert yet. In a land where neither people nor ideas can circulate freely, these young Palestinians refuse to suffer their daily lives and aim to become involved by taking concrete action. Filled with doubt and concern over the future of their country, they use their art to depict the situation in Palestine, in the hope that, thanks to this international language, their cause will reach a greater audience.

Each main character leads us to secondary figures. We meet a fisherman, from a long line of fishermen, who has a hard time coping with the fishing embargo, currently bringing the population to the brink of starvation. We discover the life of a family, whose members have chosen radically opposed ways: the father is a factory worker, Hamas sympathiser, who organises his day-to-day life between his job and the activities inherent to his faith in a radical Islam. He has two sons; the first is a security agent for Fatah, the Palestinian Authority, a position he is proud of, whereas his brother hopes to earn enough money to obtain a visa for any country that could possibly welcome him.

The lives of the Palestinian people are affected on every level by the recent events, which seem to show that Palestine is now divided into two countries, with the taking of Gaza by Hamas, and on the other hand, the West Bank, still under the authority of Fatah.

In March, we shot more than 20 hours of material. This allows us to follow our characters in the present context, ie. in Gaza under the Hamas occupation. Our protagonists evolve against this dramatic canvas. The rap band was forced to cancel their planned tour in Israeli towns because they cannot leave Gaza and Hamas has banned them from performing live. Meanwhile, they carry on writing new songs. The fisherman can no longer go out to sea. To survive, he makes kites for children. The two sons stay locked up at home and stock up on food, endlessly waiting. Young Mohamed, once in charge of security for Fatah, retains his freedom but is obviously not able to work anymore, while his brother, still hoping for a visa, has put his dream on hold. The factory where he worked has been shut down and all government administrations have stopped functioning.

In 2008, the state of Israel will be sixty. The current situation of the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip alone outlines the absurdity of these sixty years of conflict between Israelis and Palestinians.
