140 000 Chinese for the Big War

a film directed by
Olivier GUITON
(52', 1996 - 1997)

In 1916, 140 000 Chinese were hired by the British and French authorities to stand in for the farm hands and factory workers who had gone to war.

This was a period of upheaval and their fate was unfortunate : transportation, working conditions, accommodation, wages were generally inadequate.

In Europe as well as in China, the memory of these humble people, who were usually poor and illiterate, has practically died out. The only trace left is the Noyelles cemetery, where 850 of them are buried.

Indeed, many of them died on the spot and the ir story is told through stock-shots, testimonies either from contemporaries or second-generation Chinese, excerpts from letters from a Chinese worker to his parents in China.

This film provides an opportunity to throw light on these obscure faces and to discover at last these recruits from the other end of the world.
